As we head into spring we are super busy!
In Reading students will begin book groups after Spring Break where we will learn how to use “accountable talk” to work on collaborating in a small group. We continue to combine our Reading is Thinking skills, plot and letter writing in our Reading Response Journals weekly. A good question to ask when your child is reading at home is, “What surprised you? Did anything catch your attention?” Also, “What is the problem of your story?” “What are the characters trying to accomplish?”
Thanks for working with your student to choose their final reading goal for their home reading practice. I am excited to see how their goals have grown!
In writing we are working on personal choice projects. Many students are researching a topic they want to learn more about and writing stories. We have been choosing ways we want to publish our findings. Yes, we can make books but some have sent letters, are making movies and more.
Our word study/spelling will continue with a list that comes home every other Tuesday. They have a week to practice the words and on the following Tuesday they test.
In Social Studies we have covered Historic Native Americans and Europeans in the “new world”. Topics we will cover are the Colonies, French Indian War and the struggles of Native American tribes with Europeans. We will continue by looking at the American Revolution, Ohio Pioneers, and Government. We will have a project called Pioneer Journals where students will write a Historical Fiction story in the form of a journal. It will be written in first person from the perspective of a pioneer moving to the Ohio Territory. This is an integrated social studies and writing project. They will use their knowledge of pioneers to educate readers about life as a pioneer.
I hope you have a wonderful Spring Break!!!
